Central Heating: Reducing your Heating Bills with Home Insulation

Reducing your Heating Bills with Home Insulation

One of the most significant ways to improve the amount of heat that you get from your boiler and central heating is to replace any older heating systems with new energy efficient boilers, radiators and possibly renewable energy source heating.

If you are considering new central heating system installation or you want to improve the efficiency of your existing boiler, there are a number of ways for you to insulate your home and get the full benefit of the energy produced for your home.

Home Insulation for Improving your Central Heating

Roof and loft insulation

It is estimated that a quarter of all heat lost from a home without adequate insulation disappears through the roof. Because heat rises, insulating your attic, loft space or flat roof can significantly reduce the amount of heat lost from your home and will drastically help reduce your heating bills.

Because loft insulation remains effective for over 42 years, installing adequate insulation will pay for itself many times over if carried out correctly.

Floor insulation

By sealing the gaps between flooring and skirting boards along with adding insulation beneath the floorboards, you can insulate your home from heat loss and reduce draughts.

Many of the work required to insulate your floors can be carried out by the home owner using products bought from DIY stores saving you more money.

Cavity wall insulation

Uninsulated walls account for up to a third of all heat loss experienced in the home. During winter months, heat will escape from your home faster so you will notice an increase in your heating bills if you do not have adequate insulation.

Most homes built after 1920 will have a cavity between two walls which can be filled with cavity wall insulation. Adequate wall insulation can keep warmth within your home and reduce condensation inside the house.

Solid wall insulation

Solid walls let out twice as much heat as a cavity wall does so it is important to insulate the walls of your home to reduce your energy bills. Homes built before 1919 will generally have solid walls and will require insulating.

Solid walls can be insulated from the inside or outside and generally cost more than cavity wall insulation but the amount of money that you can save on your heating bills will also be larger.

Draught-proofing

Controlled ventilation in your home helps reduce condensation and damp but uncontrolled draughts can allow too much heat to escape and let in cold air. Draught-proofing your home is one of the most cost effective methods of improving energy efficiency and reducing your central heating bills.

Insulating tanks, pipes and radiators

If your hot water cylinder does not already have an insulation jacket around it, adding insulation can be an easy way to save energy and reduce heating bills. By fitting an adequate British Standard jacket onto your cylinder, you can cut the amount of heat lost by 75%.

Insulating any exposed hot water pipes increases the time that your water will stay hot for reducing heat loss easily.
