Ten Signs That Your Central Heating Is in Danger of Failure
What are the signs that your heating needs repair or maintenance?
Water heating systems can become less effective over time due to wear and tear. If you have not had your heating system serviced within the last year or more, there is a good chance that your heating can become faulty and you will want to seek the opinion of a professional.
Look out for any of the following signs that your water heater is in need of repair:
- No Hot Water
- Limited Hot Water
- Pilot Does Not Light
- Pilot Does Not Stay Lit
- Water is Too Hot
- Main Burner Will Not Remain Lit
- Rusty or Black Coloured Water
- Slow Recovery Time
- Pressure Relief Valve Has Started Leaking
- Leaking From Your Hot Water Tank
A plumbing and heating engineer will assess the age and condition of your boiler and heating system and will offer you the option of getting your boiler repaired or replaced completely.
When you begin to experience problems with your hot water you should contact a professional plumbing engineer as soon as possible or you may find that your heating is beyond repair and the only choice that you have available is a complete replacement.
How old does my water heater have to be to need replacing?
For homes which have a boiler over ten years old, it is likely that you will need to invest in a new heating system. The advantages of replacing an old boiler with a new energy efficient model will mean that you will find that you will save money on your energy bills.
If your boiler is less than ten years old, you may be able to get a water heater expert to carry out repairs to get your heating back on track.
What are the common problems for water heaters?
Before calling our a heating engineer you should check the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker is a safety feature on water heaters which will trip whenever it experiences a thermostat break, a short circuit or an overload. You may save the cost and trouble of calling out a plumber by simply switching your circuit breaker back on
For water heaters over ten years old, it is advisable not to attempt to repair it and get a replacement boiler. Water heaters often develop leaks over time which will be the cause of the malfunction. Any signs of leakage or damage to the tank will mean that you need a new water heater installed by a professional installation engineer.
If your pilot light is not working it may be caused by a damaged gas valve. Defective gas valves will prevent any gas from reaching the burner.
A clogged vent or flue may be the cause of your boiler not producing enough hot water. It may also be caused by a faulty thermostat. A bad thermostat may also cause your water to be too hot.
Do you smell gas?
Warning: If you are attempting to investigate problems with your gas boiler you should get advice from a Gas Safe engineer before attempting any repair work. Natural gas is an explosive substance. If you smell gas, you should call the National Gas Emergency Service 24 hours a day on 0800 111 999.
Only a Gas Safe registered engineer is permitted to carry out any repairs, servicing or replacements of gas appliances in domestic or commercial premises.

I love the handy diagram! There are many different warning signs from your central heating and it’s important to deal with these sooner rather than later. Once a boiler hits ten years, it’s going to struggle a lot more and you are far more likely to need a replacement.
