What is the Greenest way to heat your home? Part 2: biomass boilers

If you are considering installing a biomass boiler for your home or business, Ethical Consumer has compiled a guide to the most environmentally friendly biomass companies in the UK.

How much can you save by installing a Biomass Boiler?

Replacing your existing heating system with a Biomass boiler is most cost effective if you are replacing electric or a solid fuel heating. The savings that you could see would be between £170 and £390 per year.

Replacing a gas boiler with a biomass boiler may not provide as significant savings to your fuel bill and you will need to consider the supply and storage of wood. If you are able to store large quantities of wood, you can expect to pay less to your wood supplier.

Installing a typical automatically-fed pellet boiler within the average home will cost around £11,500. This cost includes the boiler system, the installation, fuel store and 5% VAT.

What are the Environmental Benefits of a Biomass Boiler?

Boimass fuelled heating systems do release CO2 into the atmosphere but it is only returning the same quantity of CO2 that the plants absorbed whilst growing and can thus it can be re-absorbed by the replacement crops planted for future biomass fuel.

Burning fossil fuels release CO2 which has been stored within the earth for millions of years and this additional CO2 is the cause of imbalance within the environment that leads to global warming.

If you replace a coal fuelled system or an electric storage heater with a biomass fuelled boiler, you could save up to 9.5 tonnes of CO2 being released per year. If all of the heating in the UK was fuelled by biomass boilers it is estimated that carbon emissions would be reduced by three million tonnes each year.
