What is the Greenest way to heat your home? Part 1: Gas Boilers

These findings from Ethical Consumer have rated the variety of heating systems available to find out which is the most energy efficient and green product to heat your home.

Energy Efficient Gas Boilers

According to UK law, all new boiler installations must be high efficiency condensing boilers. High efficiency condensing boilers can reduce your heating bill by up to 40% and CO2 emissions by 30%.

Compared to older boilers which were able to convert about 60% of the energy used into heat, a new condensing boiler will convert over 90% of fuel into heat.

All condensing boilers installed in the UK are rated for energy efficiency by Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK (SEDBUK).

Of the 25 gas condensing boilers that were reviewed the overall score of how green each brand has been rated took into account the green ethics of the company and the energy efficiency of their products.

The 5 lowest rating companies were as follows:

Energy Efficient Boiler BrandEthical Consumer Rating (out of 20)
Worcester 9.5
Vokera 10.5
Klob 10.5
Chaffoteaux & Maury 10.5
Veissmann 11

The company Worcester / Bosch has also been influential within the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, a lobby group that has been influencing policy makers internationally in favour of corporate advances.

Veissmann also came under criticism for operating within Oppressive Regimes and using Tax Havens. Veissmann was also penalised for its effect on Climate Change for its fleet of private jets and airfield.
